Both of my parents are police officers and I grew up in a small town just outside of Cardiff, Wales. Iโve always been a person with a lot of self-doubt and I didnโt even believe I would get into university at all, let alone Oxford. I applied pretty certain that I wouldnโt get an interview, sat the entrance exam fully convinced that I wouldnโt pass it, and went to interviews with every part of me feeling like I had absolutely no chance of a place here. โHow are interviews goingโ๏ธโ I asked in my Insta story...so far responses have ranged from โTerribly ๐โ, to โI have no idea! ๐คโ, to โIโve actually enjoyed them! โบ๏ธโ and you know what all of these answers are perfectly normal! Itโs so difficult to really know how theyโve gone and my advice would be to try not to over-analyse them too much (advice I admit I did not take on board...I played out every question & every answer again and again in my head, until I could literally give you a script of every interview ๐คฏ) The whole system at Oxford Uni is complicated; you could get an offer after just two interviews, you could get one six interviews later or you could be pooled to a completely different college, itโs pretty impossible to work out! I was very pleased that lots of you have said that, regardless of the interviews themselves, you have enjoyed the overall experience and if you can treat it as a chance to discuss a subject you love, explore a new city and meet new people, well then there is nothing to lose and everything to gain ๐โจWishing you all the best of luck ๐ . โขTHE EXTENT OF NEURAL PLASTICITY IS FAR GREATER THAN WE THOUGHTโข A recent study published in Cell Reports showed that people who learn to paint WITH their feet develop detailed maps of each toe in their brains whereas typically such maps do not exist. I am not suggesting people paint with their feet- unless you want/need to. Itโs the principles of experience based brain plasticity that are important. Here they are: 1) YOUR BRAIN IS A MAP OF EXPERIENCE. 2) THOSE MAPS CAN CHANGE DRAMATICALLY. 3) THE URGENT NEED TO ACQUIRE A NEW SKILL DRIVES THE SPEED AND EXTENT OF PLASTICITY.
