Charles Bukowski - Factotum. “If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”
i recently finished “how to write an autobiographical novel” by alexander chee and i only have good things to say about it! - the book is a collection of short story/vignette-like chapters about chee’s life. ranging from growing roses in a nyc apartment to being a young queer korean activist, his stories are captivating and incredibly well-written. so does he actually tell you how to write an autobiographical novel? not exactly - although the reader gets to see how chee got there himself along with some great writing tips woven into many of the stories. regardless, i still felt as though i did learn a lot about writing through the book - how it’s done, how difficult it can be, and why people write. whether you want to write or not, i highly recommend picking up this collection - it’s incredibly unique, touching, and overall a beautiful work. i look forward to reading more by the author!

Piccole donne! #piccoledonne#louisamayalcott
after not particularly enjoying catcher in the rye in high school, i wasn’t in a rush to read more salinger. however, i’ve been seeing franny and zooey all over the place on bookstagram lately and decided to give it a try. it’s a super small and fast read, consisting of two related short novellas. i found that this time around, i actually enjoyed salinger’s writing - it was unique, often quite witty, and definitely kept me glued to the page - i finished the book in just over a day! the stories essentially follow franny, a young woman in college, as she becomes disenchanted with the world she lives and and suffers a mental breakdown. i would absolutely recommend this book for a short and interesting read. perhaps i also need to give the catcher in the rye a second chance!
