I’ve posted others from this same night, but this one differs in that it was one of my earliest attempts at tracking. The first few outings I brought the tracker along, it didn’t get much use for fear I might not get the alignment right and come away with nothing to show for a night out. However, on this night I was determined to get at least one good tracked shot. So after shooting multiple angles the more traditional way (higher ISO, shorter exposure for stacking) I brought out the Skywatcher Star Adventurer and got everything ready to go. I hadn’t been able to find a lot of good info on how to actually use it properly, so I did a lot of guessing. Locating Polaris through the polar scope was the biggest challenge. It’s easy enough to find with the naked eye, but looking through the scope unaided is a whole other ballgame. I probably hunted around for 15 minutes before I settled on the what seemed like the right star. These days I can find it in 30 seconds, so in that regard I did improve. Apparently I guessed correctly, as my track seems to have been pretty solid for 2.5 minutes. Jesse Graver in Death Valley — REPOST: @creation.captured from facebook.com/groups/milkywaychasers chosen by @tracyleephotos — MWC Admin: @tracyleephotos --- #milkywaychasers to be featured or post on Facebook.com/groups/milkywaychasers. Tag a friend who might enjoy this Milky Way image and journey! --- From Jesse about this image: --- TRACKED/BLEND This is the first real attempt I made at capturing the Orion constellation, and It was more difficult than I imagined. I used a equatorial mount and experimented with a few different exposure times. I started at 1 min because if photographing the milkyway it would usually produce good detail, but I barely captured anything but the brightest stars! So I tried a 4 min exposure next and I could start to see some of the nebulosity but it was very very faint on the back of my camera. So I figured I would try 6 mins, and although I was starting to get more detail I was also getting some noticeable star trailing because I only polar aligned with a laser. In post processing, it was much harder to pull out detail from the image than a typical milkyway shot. I did some color grading to let the nebulas stand out but I would have imagined I could get much more out of the image. I’ll be excited to go out and try to shoot Orion again, I believe I will try stacking exposures for the next attempt I make. If you guys have any tips on how many frames to stack, if you use dark frames, or what (free) software you use, your advice would be much appreciated! I was with two friends. We experienced bioluminescent plankton in the sand. I never captured an image of it, too busy with the shipwreck. Every time we took a step on the sand the weight would cause the sand to light up with white sparkles. It was impressive and eventually got three grown men to stomp around like children watching the sparkles." || Please show support to our guest artists by visiting their IG gallery. - TECHNIQUE & EXIF: Single • Sony a7rii + Sigma Art DG HSM f1.4 • 10 second, f1.4, ISO 3200 • Lighting - A single @LumeCube. - LINKS: FB.com/solution7media. .
