‘Saturn’ by @elhammirzap0ur is a vinyl record player inspired by the planet Saturn, its rings and its moon Titan. One glance at it and it truly looks like Saturn with its rings rotating around it gloriously, and with Titan calmly by the side of the planet. - Saturn comprises of a black turn-table platform, which will subtly remind you of Saturn’s rings. Placed on top of the base platform is a spherical speaker or the upper hemisphere of the entire structure, which is what the planet Saturn would probably look like if viewed from the top. Attached to the sphere is the tonearm, and the end of the needle has been inspired by Titan! A little orange blob at the end of the tonearm represents Titan and helps in playing your beloved vinyl records. - How to operate Saturn? Fairly simple. Pluck the upper hemisphere off the turntable, and place the record of your choice onto the base platform. Place the sphere again, and position the Titan-esque needle. Press the Power button, followed by the Play button. Watch as the record begins to rotate like one of Satun’s rings, Titan reads the record, and your favorite hits pour forth from the record player. Saturn comes amped with two engines to power it, ensuring that your record player never falters. The designer harbors a deep love for Astronomy, and in his attempt to combine both design and Astronomy, he has created a truly one of a kind product, that allows us to listen to some old vinyl favorites and also takes us on a trip through the Milky Way! - Designer: Elham Mirzapour - Follow us @yankodesign (572K+) for product design news, @yankodesignjobs for design jobs & @yankodesignselect for buyable designs.
Ross Lovegrove and Formula 1 collaborate over a series of incredibly intricate fragrances. - In signature Lovegrove fashion, with the use of generative modeling and organic skeletal structures, these perfume bottles are 3D printed directly in metal. Created as a collaboration between Formula 1, Designer Parfums, and Ross Lovegrove Studio, the bottles are F1’s debut in the fragrance market, and help capture an olfactory experience that most die-hard F1 fans will relate to… the smells of burnt rubber, brake oil, and wet asphalt. The perfumes don’t literally smell of burning rubber, but evoke a similar representation. Playing with ingredients like black pepper, musks, bergamot, leather, among others, the fragrances, available in a series of 5 bottles, capture the adrenaline rush that is Formula 1. - The bottles come with an intricate bio-aesthetic with an outer framework protecting an inner fragrance-chamber and are 3D printed in metal, designed by Lovegrove. Capturing the bare-basics approach to building a car’s chassis, the bottles are uniquely skeletal and provide an intense tactile and visual experience that’s as complex as the perfumes inside it. Capturing an experience that’s equal parts racy, raw, and luxurious, the bottles even come with a fragrance for women, given that 44% of Formula 1’s audience comprises females. When the perfumes finish, the inner flasks may be replaced with new ones. The idea is to preserve the bottle’s outer form as you would a trophy, giving it the reverence it most certainly deserves. - The bottles, as luxurious as they look, come with a price tag to match. Limited to 20 pieces per fragrance, each bottle will sell for $10,000 starting with the collection’s launch at the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2019. The fragrances, however, will be reissued in a less expensive bottle (again designed by Lovegrove) starting April next year for the general public. - Designer: @rosslovegrovestudio for Designer

This machine crushes beer bottles into sand for construction. New Zealand beer company DB Breweries has installed bottle crushing machines that turn their @dbexport Beer bottles into usable sand for construction and even pharmaceuticals. Simply drop in your used beer bottle and the machine turns it into 200 grams of powder. The process involves the removal of silica dust, which results in the sand substitute. Beach sand has been heavily used in construction for decades and with the increase in demand, it's causing 70% to 90% of our beaches eroding away (according to the New York Times.) This project aims to replace the sand with beer bottle sand, which will not only preserve our beaches but also prevent the glass bottles ending up in landfills.
