Satyajit Ray's Intellectual Human Drama Masterpiece #Agantuk completes 30 Years Today. It was the last film of Ray and WHAT A MEMORABLE GOOD-BYE IT WAS! My 2nd Most Favourite Film of Ray after #Charulata (1964). Utpal Dutt in sublime Form, thought-provoking dialogues, mainstream human emotions and hard-hitting seminar on so called civilized society. A MUST WATCH!#30YearsOfAgantuk#agantukmovie #agantuk #thestranger #SatyajitRay #UtpalDutt #deepankardey #mamatashankar #nfdc #dhritimanchatterjee #RabiGhosh #ajitbandyopadhyay #promodeganguly #subratachatterjee #bengalimovie #bengalifilm #bengalicinema #classicmovie #masterpiece #satyajitrayfilms #classic #90smovies #90sfilm

36 Chowringhee Lane (1981)Dir - Aparna SenScreenplay - Aparna SenMiddle-aged Violet (Jennifer Kendal), an Anglo-Indian teacher, lives alone in a flat at 36 Chowringhee Lane in Calcutta. When a former student starts visiting her with her boyfriend, Violet welcomes them eagerly. A Masterpiece. Best Aparna Sen film till date as per me. The film depicts the melancholic tale of a lonely but gracious soul, that braves the harsh reality of the selfishness of humans but is inevitably let down by the selfish lot. The purity of Miss Stoneham is contested with the deviousness and manipulative nature of Nandita and Samaresh. And yet it is done so elusively that throughout the film one roots for the duo though apprehending that they will fail to live up to the expectation. What is worse is that one cannot help but wrench watching Miss Stoneham's profound pain and dismay. Oftentimes a kind soul is trampled without the slightest regard and Miss Stoneham realises this bitter truth, as she reinstates "Pray, do not mock me. I am a very foolish fond old man" quoting Shakespeare. She retires dispirited with a heaviness in heart that no amount of consolation can undo the damage. Jennifer Kendall plays the part effortlessly, brilliantly supported by Debashree Roy and Dhritiman Chatterjee. The background score gives the film the impetus it needed to create the mood and the tone. The narrative is interspersed with alluring and soothing tunes. Aparna Sen made a point very clear with her directorial venture- there is more to cinema than those hackneyed stories being told over and over again. Making a beautiful realistic film and showcasing the change. The film also won National Award for Best Direction. Overall, a melancholic tale which should be watched. Available on YouTube. :)))))))))

The sons and daughters of '71 The young and fierce souls of '71,Who walked the muddy streets, On bare feet are tired today. Tired they are. That's why there's an impression of '71 On '21's body. Fascism, riots and movements Like '71 can be noticed in today's world. On the streets, people now walk in an aimless way. They don't have their own words or language, They don't know how to protest, They have no requests to anyone. They carry no love in their heart, They smash the innocent flowers without caring much .Lies reside at the tip of their tongue. They show a deaf ear to poor people's pleadings. They are young, they are new, they are modern! They are the sons and daughters of '71 .The sons and daughters of '71 have no wishes,No desires. They have nothing in their possession to boast off. They only know to run from one catastrophe to another And name this journey "A revolution". - Samadrita In frame - Mrinal Sen's "Calcutta Trilogy "1. Interview 2. Calcutta '71 3. My experiences with the Cinema of Iranian Icons like Kiarostami and Panahi last year sky-rocketed my love for meta-filmmaking to a whole new level as ever since I've been wishing to check out if there are any such classics in old parallel Indian Cinema as well and thanks to a nice restored print on YouTube (usually my last place to search for a film though) itself, my search came to an end with AKALER SANDHANE / IN SEARCH OF FAMINE (1980) on the account of Mrinal Sen's 98th birth anniversary! One of my favourites modes of storytelling in Cinema has always been the character action through which we get to know about characters mostly through their actions without much exposition in any form and my introduction to Mrinal Sen became so memorable due to this approach of him in unraveling many things one by one at times even simultaneously so without any preach whatsoever. What starts off as a film crew trying to recreate the Bengal famine of 1943 for their own film slowly transforms into how they begin to realize there is actually no need to recreate anything because the conditions still seem the same if not worse and through this three-way meta filming involving his film's cast, the film-within-film's cast and crew and the audience, the film strips bare the borders between the memory of past and the present and the perceptions that come along without even the need for resorting to traditional flashbacks, i.e., for instance, take the scene in which a game is organized by Smita Patil where she shows her fellow crew members different photographs of famine and while many of them answering straight away with 1943, in fact, the time periods differ so much so that it comments about the pertinence of the situation all these decades. Also, in one such similar game scene earlier or rather after the "jugaad" of collecting cases of acute malnutrition from newspaper offices and private collections, Dhritiman Chatterjee, the director of this film-within-film, presents a photograph by hiding the face, but the posture reminds us of the Buddha or in this particular situation of the infamous 'Fasting Buddha', a striking metaphor of sorts maybe to... To think that a complex film can be made on a deceptively simple premise following a man's "dawn to dusk" journey and observing his struggle to get a suit for the INTERVIEW (1970) he had to attend at a foreign company, To think that one can tell such a personal political story so hilariously in pitch-perfect dark comedy tone without forsaking the seriousness of the subject matters at any cost, To think that one can blend the techniques of Cinéma vérité and fictional surrealism with such ease and efficiently use fourth-wall breaks to their maximum effect, To think that films like 'Pratidwandi' and 'Interview' came out in the same year that too within a month with two greats of Indian Cinema, beginning their respective Calcutta Trilogies by not giving any fucks whatsoever to the traditional storytelling and shot transitions by warping dreams and reality in the most unique of ways out there - 1970 was some year and Mrinal Sen was a "smart" mad rad man!Opening with a symbolic sequence of decolonization with the colonial monuments in Calcutta getting dragged along on the streets and the image coming a full circle towards the end in terms of what more they could've meant, the film 'Interview' follows a man who has everything like intelligence talent eligibility except the clothes his potential recruiters wanted for the interview and with the hopeless undertone of unemployment or looking for a better job situation among the youth of the state slowly getting the better of them due to the authorities' own politics and personal prejudices, Mrinal Sen, through a tragicomedy of errors and misfortunes, presents a fascinating buildup to the titular interview and his genius lies in the way he subverted this interview to actually make it take place between Ranjit and the audience. Some of the best fourth-wall break sequences ever (in one of them, Mrinal Sen even went all-out to play a clip of Karuna Banerjee from 'Pather Panchali'), some of the best usages of newsreel footages, montage and intercutting with one standout sequence towards the end encompassing each and every corner, profession of human life set to Vijay Raghav Rao's rousing classical score...
