Throwing a cylinder on the wheel using 400grams of clay • This is the shape all potters need to nail before they can make anything else. Cylinders are the basis of all forms: mugs, vases, teapots, even bowls start out as a cylinder so it’s important to get this one right. • When I was learning I’d make a pile of clay balls 20 or so and just throw cylinders, over and over and over. Not aiming To actually make anything. Cutting each one off the wheel and putting it straight in the reclaim and starting again. • It’s hard for a learner to not want to end up with something at the end of a throwing session but it’s important to be ok with that. The time is never wasted because you’re always learning something and practice like this make everything that does end up in the kiln all the better. • You can watch the whole vid over on my IG TV. Happy Sunday folks 💖
Handled mugs, thrown, trimmed sides and bottom and the handles attached and pulled into shape. These are bone dry now and will soon be bisque fired and glazed when my kilns arrive. I think it’s safe to say there’ll be enough to go around compared to my usual shop updates that stock three or so. I’ve never had the chance to produce as much as I have now, in the past when selling work I was still only even making for myself two days a week, now I can do as much as I’d like, with of course a whole new side of admin that comes with running and looking after your own studio. Not every day can be a making day and I’m getting used to that. Alongside running my Instagram account days on the computer are common, editing images, replying to emails, ordering in more materials and printing all the labels for my packages. At least I have an online presence as otherwise I’d be a hermit in my studio. I’ve received a lot of emails asking if I’m going to be teaching workshops now I have a space. At the moment I only have two wheels and most likely I wont get many more as my workshop just isn’t large enough. So, if they do happen it’ll be on a small scale, with perhaps 3-4 places maximum, or they’ll be focused on other skills such as handle pulling or learning how to fire a gas kiln, if there’s interest for that? These mugs change a lot in the following stages, when bone dry like this they all share a uniformity briefly before being altered by the kind of glazes that are dipped over and how the firing treats each of them. What I like about the glazes I use is that there’s a lot of variety, sometimes it moves more or the flames can create gradients of hue if one part is scorched more than the other and dots of iron appear randomly as it bubbles out and melts on the surface into a tiny pool.

Wheel thrown ink dip pens with matching rests and antique nibs that are interchangeable as they can be inserted and removed from the metal ferrule that slides into the end of these—sitting on a page of swiftly sketched teapots. The entire pen is glazed save the hole in the top, this was by far the greatest challenge when initially creating these. I tried several things beforehand but the simplest option ended up working best. The hole where the ferrule fits is much deeper than necessary and means I can just slot them over and balance them on thick nichrome rod. It’s not foolproof, as they’re so thin they can bend during the firing and in the worst case scenarios they lean onto one another and fuse solid. Inevitably I lose a few during the firing, the last time, out of thirty I made I lost three, so not a bad ratio. I should add, the lean is quite nice in person, even if only very slight, it stops them rolling too which is handy as they are exceptionally fragile. I also often receive lots of comments asking why they’re thrown, rather than say cast or rolled. I feel that each is more individual for being thrown, lengths differ, widths, the throwing rings themselves travel along the pen in varying ways and provide your fingers grooves in which they can rest as they draw. Throwing extras is something most potters do. If I’m ever making a batch of say thirty pieces for a specific project I’ll always throw five or so more, just incase something goes wrong, a pot might crack, a handle could split from it’s body, a rim could warp or the glaze might fire unexpectedly during the reduction firing. Extras as a necessary evil and more experimental your firings become the more you have to account for this.

late night in the studio last night! got six new mugs made along with that short cup to the front left and a planters pot to the right in the front. i’m really happy with these mugs! they looks gigantic right now (and they kinda are) but i’m compensating for how much the clay body shrinks once it’s fired. i can’t wait to see their final outcome, i have a good feeling about this batch!

I'm in love with this purple glaze. Drew says he still wants to tweak it and do some more tests, but I'm really excited about where it's heading. . Shout out to @coneinfinity and @ceramicmaterialsworkshop for the original recipe. . We're here at CraftMorristown today and tomorrow. It's our last show of 2019! Which is crazy. If you are in the area come check it out!
Pretty stoked for these pieces. I’ve got some new exciting glaze recipes on these bad boys that I can’t wait to see! This blue powder is RBG glaze which is fully dunked on, and the grey on top is PVC Clear. It’s on top of the RBG Glaze. It should turn out suuuuuper pretty- but you never know what the kiln will end up creating. Fingers crossed until the results are in!
