My 2019 best restaurant list: In a year of epic meals Zübeyir Ocakbasi was my favorite and probably my favorite restaurant I’ve been to ever! Hyperbole warranted...I’ve never seen a place like this in my life. Ok so I said that earlier at lunch that day (that lunch is also in my best of list too). Everything is cooked like this...Fun, casual and so delicious. Father and son cooking directly in front of us. Breads being baked in the back, all the kebabs made a la minute. I loved Zübeyir Ocakbasi so much, the kind of food you want to eat every week. A mix of locals & tourists all sitting at the head of the grill eating amazing kebabs. I can still smell the grill, hear the sizzle and taste the food. I saw diners sharing their food and drink with other tables...that’s a special kind of place. Melipona - the stingless bees. Here in the Yucatan they produce honey that’s more syrup like and can hold acidity as if lime was added. It’s also an old Mayan medicine. Still used to this day. For sore throats, for small wounds and as we learned from @mikebagale also for sore or tired eyes and allergies. Sautéed mushrooms and fresh cracked black pepper is a match from heaven. It’s very important though, that the pepper is only roughly broken up in a mortar. A quarter teaspoon per person, added last minute. I promise you won’t regret.
