I Fidanzati. The Fiances. Ermanno Olmi. 1963. At 7:30 tomorrow morning I go under ether for what promises to be a minor outpatient procedure. While in Gaziantep this March I mistakenly stuffed my luggage with far too many pistachios. The strain of toting them around Anatolia led to a hernia. Aside from an incident in July which was both brief and excruciating, there have been no ill effects. Thankfully I have reliable insurance coverage at the moment, so I opted to remedy the issue now rather than risking further complications. Though my untimely end is statistically highly unlikely, any medical procedure which requires unconsciousness brings pause. It was with my uncertain future in mind that I turned to Ermanno Olmi’s I Fidanzati for what could be my final feature length film. I followed my screening with a substantial Pueblan supper as well as mamey & mango y chamoy ice cream. If everything goes south, at least I ended on a high note. The film is one I’ve adored since it was first released on DVD in 2003. Were I in a position to shoot a film of my own, I would apply its template to Turkey. I see so much of myself in the world that he evokes. Every time I encounter a new place, I try to approach it through Olmi’s lens. He understands the majesty of every day existence. A pair of Milanese lovers are separated when the man accepts a work assignment in distant Sicily. Beyond this simple premise, there is no narrative. Even the setting could be substituted for any place on the planet where industrial progress seeks to supplant an ancient culture. It is a motion picture made with a still photographer’s eye. Every shot is searching for a memorable face or a point of interest on the horizon line. Each image is purposeful and emotionally evocative. It is a film that portrays the broadest range of human emotion without relying on needless exposition or overly dramatic flourishes. It is cinema as tone poem.
