I’d say I put in a pretty intense workout every day at the gym (most days). But today’s 1.5 mile hike up to Flag Rock KILLED. My quads are killing me, yet my kids seem completely unaffected, even the 5 & 6 year old. . What’s remarkable about Flag Rock is this flag is the same height from the city streets below as the Twin Towers. Every year there’s a gentleman that leads a hike up in commemoration of the first responders who ran up the stairs of the Twin Towers during that awful day. It’s a LOOOONG way. It really makes you think about all the events that took place that day. . The views today were beautiful, the temperature was perfect, the leaves were magnificent, and the company was....all over the place. Some kids loved it, some kids didn’t, and some complained the entire time. . What have you done recently that made you question you physical fitness? What is so stunning about the Flight 93 memorial is how peaceful the whole place is. It is almost inconceivable that something so violent and destructive could happen in such a bucolic place. The NPS has done a wonderful job of preserving that peacefulness while honoring the legacy of those who died there. The memorial is made up of different parts. There’s a long, dark walkway that reflects the path of the plane as it approached the field. As visitors follow the path, they walk through an opening in two large, white walls. On the far side of the walls, visitors can see beautiful fields, rolling hills, and forests full of trees. In the center of this beautiful view is the field where the plane crashed, a large boulder marking the exact spot of impact. Visitors can then walk or drive down to a memorial plaza in front of the field where the names of the victims are inscribed on a wall. The field has been preserved as the final resting place of the victims.
