Where were you at a year ago? Don’t forget to acknowledge that you’re still (and always will be) growing, brave one. We often forget that healing has no destination. We think that healing will bring us closer to becoming a person who never feels fear, never has big emotional reactions, or never has negative thoughts about their worth or place in this world. The truth is that healing is a process of becoming. There is no destination which means there is no endpoint. We equate being healed to being our old self or a new self without the discomfort. The truth is that healing actually looks like messiness. Healing looks like embracing suffering and accepting it with open arms. Healing means having more skills to tolerate the big waves of feeling and ride the tides of discomfort into shore. The truth is that pain and suffering change us. Healing is about embracing our experiences, being radically honest about them, and envisioning a new future for ourselves and the systems/people that hurt us. Since healing feels like a forward process, we often forget to look back. We forget to look back at who we once were. We forget to acknowledge our progress and face how far we’ve come. We forget to look at progress as healing. Destination-centred healing is a view of healing that sees small changes/progress as never being enough. There’s a common goal in healing work which suggests that to be healed means to never feel again or never experience discomfort. That’s just not possible. The truth is that healing looks like messiness and feels incredibly uncomfortable. Healing is not neat and tidy. This is healing in action. So don’t forget to witness your growth and look back at how far you’ve come.
