#repost @equalaccess ・・・ #deafculture : NOISE The Deaf (profoundly Deaf) do experience "noise",.... visual "noise". Visual noise can include "loud" (bright) clothes, hair, fingernails, etc. It can be very distracting to the Deaf when worn by the person signing. If this is your taste in fashion, see me after class 🤔. Here is #howtosign "NOISE" from a Deaf persepective. #learnasl #deafway #deaf #coda #saveasl #americansignlanguage #asl101 #aslinterpreter
"Ideal" vs. "Perfect" vs. "Okay" Whats the difference? The movement and palm orientation changes slightly between the signs. Each concept may be a better fit depending on context. Here are a few examples of how I would use each sign. #asl #learnasl #aslinterpreter #asl101 #howtosign #saveasl
#howtosign: EAT So you're probably thinking "I know how to sign EAT", right? Well there is more than one way to show it. Try playing with depiction which is multi-layered and complex. It incorporates adverbial morphemes expresses a more complex description to your narrative. #asl #learnasl #americansignlanguage #signlanguage #aslthat #signlanguage101 #coda #saveasl #asl101 #signnative #keeppushingasl
There are some signs that I have seen a thousand times but STILL don't have a good English translation for. This is one of them. (⚠️This sign is produced on the throat, not chin. This is NOT the sign for prefer⚠️). Another CODA and fellow interpreter and I have discussed this sign. We thought that depending on the context, this sign may not even have an English word equivalent. It may just require tone modulation or an interjection such as "ooohh". What is a good translation for this sign? Share your thoughts. 🤔🤔🤔 (And for anyone that knows me knows I am anti-glossing. So please don't say it is "touch-throat" 🚫) .... #learnasl #asl #signlanguage #americansignlanguage #aslinterpreter #deafculture #saveasl
🔸NEW🔸#ASLforum Whether native signer or L2 (non native) ASL user, it's important for each of us as an ASL community to analyze our sign choices and the impact those sign choices make on the meaning being conveyed. We should all understand how our choices affect our communication. Lets take the sign for "someone" as an example. A slight change in the location in which the sign ia produced can impact the meaning. If I sign "someone" at a higher space or lower space, does that impact the meaning❓ If so, how❓ I find this very intriguing. Lets discuss possible differences in meaning by simply moving the sign in a higher or lower location/space. #asl #learnasl #whyisign #americansignlanguage #howtosign #signlanguage #signlanguage101 #saveasl #asl101 #coda #deafculture

#asl101 When signing a directional verb to or from someone there is no need to point or sign the pronoun "YOU, ME, THEY,..." etc. If you were to sign "HELP ME" or "GIVE YOU" for example, the direction of the sign already indicates the giver and recipient. #asl #learnasl #americansignlanguage #howtosign #aslinterpreter #coda #saveasl
#howtosign: "HOPE" Here are a few examples of how "HOPE" could be signed. Hope has more than 1 meaning. Make sure your sign for "HOPE" fits the definition and intent. #asl #learnasl #asl101 #americansignlanguage #signlanguage #saveasl #coda #aslinterpreter

#howtosign Concerned / Excited Here is a common mispronunciation of these 2 terms. "Excited" can be misunderstood when signed with the incorrect movement. The movement for excited is an upward circular motion. Concerned must be signed with an alternating back and forth motion moving toward and away from the body. "Close enough" should never be the mindset when it comes to communicating thoughts and feelings and expressing ideas. Otherwise, some one might be asking you "what's wrong" when you are actually excited. 😟🤗 #learnasl #asl #asl101 #howtosign #coda #aslinterpreter #saveasl

#aslmispronunciations "Sign Language" Ok everyone. Here is one of the most common mispronunciations I have seen. Ironically, sign language is one of the first signs many people learn and sadly, it it mispronounced. No worries! This video shows both the incorrect and correct ways to sign it. (Side note: I prefer to use A-S-L instead of "sign language" because it is the official language of the Deaf here in America. Sign language is a generic term that refers to modality) #learnasl #asl #signlanguage #americansignlanguage #asl101 #saveasl #coda #aslinterpreter #youloveitiliveit

Merci ! #rensta #repost: @equalaccess via @renstapp ··· “ #deafculture Everywhere you look there seems to be more and more hearing people signing. Some are motivated to learn signs because they admire the language. However, taking parts of the language be offensive to the Deaf community. The term is "Cultural Appropriation" This term is defined as "the adoption or use of the elements of one culture by members of another culture" (i.e. hearing culture using elements of Deaf culture for their own gain). Cultural Appropriation does not refer to people learning ASL that support the Deaf community. However, when non members (hearing people) "borrow" parts of Deaf culture, such as some signs, just for your own benefit because they are "cool" is offensive (i.e. music videos "signed", usually not in lyrical ASL form, for their own gain). #asl #learnasl #americansignlanguage #signlanguage #signlanguage101 #coda #saveasl #asl101 #deaf ”

There has been alot of discussion in the ASL community about the apparent "purification" of ASL. Some feel that the elimination initialized signs is in a sense an attempt to purify it. I happen to understand both sides of the argument. However, as a native signer (#CODA), I slightly disagree with the "anti-purification" argument. I have changed my signs over the years in an effort to be more clear while interpreting as well as pushing the advancement of ASL. First of all, language evolves. ASL is no different. There are numerous examples of signs that have evolved of the years. Secondly, there are several initialized signs that actually HAVE been accepted into the mainstream which have NOT been considered as part of this "purification". "Parents, party, person, life, breakfast, lunch, dinner, theory" are just a few examples (some shown in the video) of formerly initialized signs that have been changed and generally accepted now. True, some signs just look weird if you no longer use the letter. Maybe that will change over time. At any rate, there is nothing wrong with the progression. Initialized signs borrow from English. They don't make the sign being produced more semantically rich (like culture). In summary, we should continue to make a distinction between English and ASL by not borrowing from English so much. We are still fighting for the recognition of ASL as a language. Less English borrowing is a good thing. But some borrowing may be necessary for clarity. That just my two cents. Let's not be so scared of progression. #asl #learnasl #americansignlanguage #signnative #signlanguage101 #coda #saveasl #asl101 #englishvsasl #howtosign
