𝘈 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦 is a phrase that is thrown around quite often – how we analyze and interpret its meaning is what ultimately determines its validity.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Quantitatively, yes, a calorie is a calorie. The term “𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦”, in and of itself, is a measurable unit of energy. If you walk a mile down your sidewalk, through the tundra, at the beach, or in the exact African grasslands where the Lion King remake was shot – each journey would be much different with great variance among appearing wildlife, climatic circumstances and thus, chances of survival – but you’d still be walking a mile, nevertheless. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Qualitatively, no, a calorie is not a calorie. The sources of food you eat go beyond just providing energy in the form of calories. Sources of calories differ in their macronutrient breakdown (carbs, proteins, fat), accompanying micronutrients (amount and specificity of vitamins/minerals), and the extent of processing (length and content of ingredient lists). Unless you’re walking a mile somewhere and back, no mile is ever really the same.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If you have any sort of body composition goal, then it’s wise to adopt a quantitative mindset with your calories; while a qualitative standpoint should 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 be in the back of your mind. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ To see physical results in the mirror while feeling your best – take on both perspectives, and create the ultimate balance with your food choices while still reaching your goals.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the information out there, especially when so much if it is often conflicting. There are 100s of tips I can give you, but here are 10 that I find to be incredibly important.  I’ve been at this whole fitness thing for about 12 years now, and I’m still learning every single day. Nobody has all the answers. If you’re new to this, just remember that we have ALL been in your shoes before. Nobody is judging you (and if they are, screw them!) and people are way more willing to help than you think. If you don’t know how to do an exercise, I promise you that somebody will be willing to help you.  One thing I wish I had done differently early on is take progress photos. I always felt so petty taking photos of myself, so I would never do it. And then after a few years, I thought “well now it’s too late because I’ve already made so much progress”. If only I had taken photos along the way, it would be the perfect reminder on just how far I have come. Don’t be embarrassed to log your progress!  The last item on this list is SO important. I want you to take a moment to let it sink in.  Don’t let your fitness journey distract you from what is truly important in your life. Yes, living a healthy life is important. But if you are freaking out because you have to miss the gym to go on the greatest vacation of your life, you’re taking it too far. Or if you can’t enjoy a family reunion out of fear of not being able to track your food, you’re taking it too far.  This health journey is only a part of your life- it’s not your entire life. When you set the standard so high, the slightest mistake feels like failure and can prompt you to say "what the hell" and go all out. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😃 Relax - if you're beating yourself up, it may be a sign your diet is too strict. No food should be off limits, and so long as about 80% of your diet is nutrient dense, unprocessed whole foods then you're golden. So maybe take a more flexible approach that allows all foods.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 😠 No Shame - shame is not a motivator, literally no good comes from it. It's really common for people to think "don't eat X, you'll feel so shit afterwards". Then they just feel shit regardless. Rather, remind yourself how proud you'll be when you stay on plan and reach your goal. And of course - if the food you want is within the plan, eat it without question, and enjoy every bite!⠀⠀
SELF CARE & HONORING YOUR BOUNDARIES 👌 - Yesterday…. I had a self care day & it was much needed - Self care is something that I have to be very intentional about, because I can easily go back to my old patterns and I tend to neglect self-care. - ❎I had a belief for a huge chunk of my life that if I’m not productive, I’m not worthy - ❎That if I work really hard I will reach my goals faster - I would be on auto pilot, trying to DO as much as I can… - 1. Not caring how drained I would feel - 2. It’s amazing. 😍Thank me later.) When it comes to alcohol and how it fits in with no food rules, I use the same advice “Go off of how you FEEL.” For instance, why are your having a drink? 🤔Is it because you genuinely feel the desire for one and it would be satisfying? Go for it! Is it because you feel pressure to have one because other people are? Pass if you want (just like that break room cake!). Or, sometimes, you decide to have a glass of wine at happy hour to enjoy the festivities (just like getting a cookie offered by grandma when you’re not hungry!) In terms of your limit, go off of what makes you feel best. Will you have a headache in the morning? Maybe stop before then. .  The same no food rules guides go for alcohol! Feeling great and staying (mostly) on track! . Since last Wednesday I told myself I had to kick my butt back into gear, I worked out everyday except Sunday. Yes, Carb Killas are great (other protein bars are available, apparently), but they’re not the ONLY way to get convenient protein on the go, and they’re certainly not the cheapest way. . The main advantage of Carb Killas is that they don’t need to be refrigerated and are therefore very portable, but neither does Beef Jerky. . The main disadvantage is that they’re bloody expensive. . For example, if you have 4 Carb Killas a week at £2.50 a time, that works out as £40 per month. . Sub your Carb Killa for a pint of Skimmed Milk, and you’ll get the same amount of protein (20g), the same calories (200kcal) but you’ll only pay 50p per pint, which works out  at £8 per month. . Ok so maybe these foods aren’t healthy in a nutrient sense BUT does not mean that it’s unhealthy to include these into our diets. ⠀ ⠀ There is no such thing as Good & Bad foods. Yes I encourage my clients to fill up on nutrient dense foods as much as possible, but I also highly encourage to include treats.⠀ ⠀ Learn how to work it in, learn how to feel good about treating yourself, learn what makes up your food. ⠀ ⠀ As long as you are learning and progressing towards your goal, then that’s all that matters 😊

‼️CLIENT GRADUATION‼️ . It’s bittersweet (more sweet than bitter) when a client graduates and moves on because the relationship built is truly unremarkable. Seeing them fly out of the nest and soar as their best self is so so sweet. 😍 — Yasmine came to me a couple of months ago seeking guidance with her nutrition. She was instructed to consume very little carbohydrates leaving her exhausted throughout her day and during her workouts.  She was frustrated because she couldn’t eat the foods she loved AND was not seeing results.  So she took a chance on herself and decided enough was enough.  We made some adjustments to her nutrition, mainly increasing her calories, aligning her macros with her goal, and times her nutrition properly around workouts, especially training CrossFit 5x per week.  She started feeling energized, hitting PRs left and right, and feeling her best damn self. I’m so proud of @ytorres329.  I will tell you, there were major mental shifts we had to tackle before these results came. We have to get in the right mindset to be successful. ¡LA MEJOR PIZZA VEGANA! . Yo NO ME CANSO de decirles lo rico que puede ser la comida vegana (y no lo soy) pero es que en esta ocasión les vengo a contar que @deraiz_cocina_cafe LA ROMPIÓ🤯 con su pizza de zapallo, así odien los sermones veganos CORRAN🏃🏾‍♀️ a probar esa pieza maestra que además de deliciosa es muy "fit"🏋🏾‍♀️. . Debo advertirles que esto es totalmente diferente a lo que conocemos como pizza y no le envidia NADA...En vez de salsa pomodoro le aplican zapallo ahumado en puré que tiene un toque ácido delicioso, acompañado de bacon de Orellana🤤 (un hongo ahumado increíble), kale crocante (que sabe a papas chips literal😲, ricotta de almendra (que sabe a crema agria con un toque herbal) y tomates cherry en masa de kamut orgánico. . Algunos me van a decir que no conocen nada de lo que les mencioné...Yo tampoco lo conocía🤷🏾‍♀️, pero el que no arriesga no gana y les juro que van a ganar una experiencia gourmet increíble👩🏾‍🍳 si visitan este restaurante en el @pizzamasterco, si no me creen a mí @eltenedorosado mismo lo puso en su lista. . Last night was @jillchristinefit @pescience pancakes for dinner! When it’s my period week – I just LEAN IN guys. That usually means a couple nights that week of a decadent dessert dinner, followed by dessert #2. {Check out Jill’s highlight “Pancakes/Waffles” for all her creations}. . Last night’s pancakes could NOT get any easier. I got distracted and overcooked them a TAD, but I have to say - - they’re better with the 75g of shredded zucchini per @vanessa_simfit recipe. That really makes them more moist! . BUT – we don’t always have zucchini, or care enough to put the effort in. Some nights I just don’t have much effort to put in, and these hit the spot for that! I’ll definitely be making them again. Actually I’m making them tonight because my Chocolate Mint Cookie @pescience is supposed to arrive!! AHHH I can’t wait!! . 31g (1 scoop) @pescience protein powder 50g liquid egg whites 30g liquid (I did 15g @skinnymixes Toasted Marshmallow syrup, and 15g water) *Jill’s recipe calls for 3tbs water, mine didn’t seem to need that much* ½ tsp baking powder . Macros for just the pancakes: 147 cals 1.5F/ 2.5C/29P . I love that all the fats and carbs are saved for your topping! Or for me – all the carbs saved for a pint of @eatenlightened Brownie Cookie Dough for dessert! {after dinner dessert} Ah the joys of being an adult and eating whatever the hell you want! .
