Online client @keenanmacd smashing Some  unassisted nordic hamstring curls for REPS! . . Many coaches have questioned the role of knee flexor hamstring strength for injury mitigation, particularly in regard to exercises like sprinting that primary utilize the hamstrings through their role as hip extensors—NOT knee flexors. . . Here’s something to consider:  The role of specificity in regards to injury mitigation is not limited solely to biomechanical  specificity. No exercise will be able to fulfill all of the criteria necessary to be considered fully specific , other than the competition exercise itself obviously. Therefore, various training means and methods will need to swap a certain degree of those said specific  components in order to meet both short and long term performance objectives. It is therefore the “cumulative functionality” gained from the sum of various training interventions  that will ultimately dictate the optimal transfer of said net capacity into athletics. . . While a nordic hamstring curl may not mimic AS MANY of the biomechanical specifications present in common sport movements such as sprinting, they ARE a fantastic way to nail coupled, eccentric, relative hamstring strength.  Additionally, some studies actually have noted positive correlation to eccentric knee flexor strength in sprinting, specifically: “ hamstring EMG activity during the swing and end-of-the-swing phases and ECCENTRIC KNEE FLEXOR peak torque are related to the amount of horizontal GRF produced during sprinting, likely because of the backward “pawing” action of the leg just before contact. These findings suggest that, in addition to their paramount importance in sprint-related sports injuries, the hip extensors, and especially the hamstrings, play a significant role in sprint acceleration performance via horizontal GRF production” . . TRAINING THE FOOT . A while ago, Miki asked Adam what he thought was the commonly most overlooked part of training, to which Adam answered the foot and ankle complex. . Why is the foot so important? . In both running and jumping, force must be applied to the ground. This involves the foot contacting the ground and receiving the return force. When functioning correctly, the foot is a spring, with the arches of the foot lengthening and providing passive energy up the chain. . If this spring mechanism is functioning incorrectly, the force from the ground must be received by other structures (often the tibia, leading to overuse and stress injuries). . Based on this, how do we maximise the spring function of the foot? . 1️⃣ Correct pressure Supination of the foot moves forces toward the 5th metatarsal, where the arches are less capable of performing as a spring. Proper function requires weight distribution through the first metatarsal, allowing a flattening and spring from the arch. . 2️⃣ Maximising spring return Given correct pressure, how do we then train the foot to maximise the return of force? 💥Jumping progressions💥 . Here are some of our go to jumping exercise for improving vertical jump height 🤾‍♂️⛹️‍♂️ 1️⃣ Trap Bar Jumps: a great exercise to develop jumping power. The weight of the trap bar makes the muscles produce more force while moving quickly. 2️⃣ Eccentric Overload Jumps: the added weight on the way down into the jump helps to trick the body into producing more force than a body weight jump. Releasing the weights before jumping helps increase the speed and height of the jump above what can be achieved in a trap bar jump. 3️⃣ Box jump: a classic jumping exercise that is easily progressed by increasing the height of the box. 4️⃣ Drop jump: another classic jumping exercise. The drop jumps teaches you to absorb the force from the landing before redirecting it back up into the air. So...When I say I lived in a tent, it wasn’t a cramped little fella, it was this. More light and vastly more spacious than my previous inner city apartment ever was but a tent none the less. . More connected with natural rhythms, sounds 🐺, temperatures (oh those cold nights) than I could ever have dreamed of. Less stuff, more resilience, better sleep, healthier relationships. One light. One electrical outlet, limited WiFi. Simplicity... but not without some very trying times. . This living experience unwittingly became the great nature experiment of my life, tuning me in to the body, mine and others, in ways I genuinely (even with a decade in the industry) never imagined were possible. . There aren’t enough words here to share how I ultimately ended up exiting urban society for the better part of 2 years.. BUT the short version is something along the lines of my insatiable curiosity and need to fully live the guidance I give you. . If I tell you that I believe nature heals, It’s because on the back end I’m studying the research, talking to people who are doing it, doing it myself. I stand behind my work and how ever this looks for you; if you are working with humans, you owe it to those humans and to yourself to be a practitioner. . Don’t just observe or just read, go out and live, try the things and make sure you’re above all else, doing your own damn work. Be a generalist and be proud. . Meet Maja Kralovcova our strength and conditioning expert for our growing Regina endurance community. Maja Kralovcova is an owner and Premier Performance Coach at Level 10 Fitness located in Regina, Saskatchewan. Maja is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with the NSCA and is also a Consultant to the Canadian Sport Centre and the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan.  Maja earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology & Health Studies and was awarded the President’s Medal as the Outstanding Graduate in Spring Convocation 2009.  In her athletic career, Maja played CIS basketball for the University of Regina Cougar Women’s Basketball team and won three silver medals at Nationals with the team. Following her basketball career, Maja expanded her sports interests to triathlons and endurance obstacle racing. Your "body" goals are bullsh*t - let's face it 🤷‍♂️ . They've most likely been contrived based on external influences like what you see on social media...so like I said...bullsh*t . These "body" goals are even more likely to be completely unrealistic and unattainable for YOU... ...and even if you have managed to accidentally set a "body" goal that is attainable - at what cost does this come? What cost will it have now and in the long run? 🤔  A couple to consider - restricted eating, decreased social life, decreased libido, depression, disordered eating, body dysmorphia...😒 . So let's talk about a better way - creating processes that improve your performance ✔️ . Notice I didn't say goals. The reason being is I'm growing less fond of the traditional goal setting model. I find it can take our focus away from the bigger picture of our health and places it on very finite achievements and endpoints. It can also make them become the "be all and end all" of the "what" and "why" we do things.  I love using performance metrics because they cover and influence all areas of our health & fitness, and are quantifiable and objective measurements (not like aesthetic goals which are very subjective) of someones progress. . However, I prefer not to set specific performance GOALS but rather use the metrics as waypoints to ensure the PROCESSES we are "installing" are serving us to become the healthiest version of ourselves (FYI: there is no "endpoint" for this). For example, a GOAL could be to Back Squat 1.5x bodyweight, however this would be part of the PROCESS of becoming stronger & more functional, and the performance of the Back Squat metric becomes a waypoint. . ✅ TO BECOME PROCESS DRIVEN - Really identify with the person you ACTUALLY want to become. What are the PROCESSES that make up that "persons" identity? What are their habits? What do the do day-to-day? And what are the steps you can take to become that person? Then start doing them 👊  Oh

Here's a snippet from one of Loxlee's articles that gives a bit of insight into a modality of training that you may not have heard of before! "BFR, known by other names such as occlusion, KAATSU, ischaemic, or hypoxic training involves the reduction of oxygenated blood flowing to the muscle while preventing deoxygenated blood returning out of the muscle. In short, this creates a by-product accumulation effect and induces an oxygen-low muscle state, therefore forcing the body to stimulate anaerobic adaptations, favourable for muscle growth."
