I am not a cool person by any definition. I have always been a little weird and quirky, filled to the brim with borderline crippling anxiety and just last week I hung up a phone call with the statement “okay, I guess I will just talk to you every day until I die” to someone I hardly know. I say the wrong thing nine and a half out of ten times and I have absolutely no filter- I oftentimes watch with horror as the words spill out of my mouth. This photo preceded a fifteen+ minute unprovoked ramble about how great helmets are. These things used to bother me a lot when I was younger - I would lay awake at night mulling over every social interaction I had and all of the ways it could potentially come back to haunt me. And when I did eventually fall asleep I (unbeknown to me) would rise from my bed and engage my parents in further conversations about all of the trials and tribulations of my young life.
⠀ ⠀
I don’t write these words from a place of self deprecating humour (although that is my love language). Rather because this morning, mulling around my kitchen, thinking about that unsusal little girl, made me realize that all of the infinite things that make me uncool, this are the exact things that invited in the people I have the extreme fortune of calling friends. They are also what forged a path to this life I get to live and are so many of the reasons #whyihike.

Go where you feel most alive ✨ . Feels so good to be back in the mountains doing what I love after spending a long time away from Switzerland in SF. I’ve been busy changing career paths and embracing a new season of life. Here’s to plenty of more moments like this spent in the mountains. I’ve been waiting to take this photograph for four years - since the day I moved to Washington. It became this “bucket list” shot that I never really thought I would get. So many variables had to line up - fresh snow, a drivable road to the trail head, and most importantly - an unfrozen lake. Yesterday, the stars somehow aligned, and after a few hours snowshoe and a four year wait. My dream shot finally became reality. This is probably my favorite photograph I’ve taken in Washington to date. Never been so happy. #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor @eddiebauer
It’s really hard to comprehend the size of Sequoias until you’re standing right next to them. My favorite season to explore these giant forests is during early summer right after the snow melts. The slightly cooler temperatures at this higher elevation help when hiking around during the day. You can feasibly get out to some incredible sequoia groves far away from the crowds in peace and solitude ☺️ It’s worth taking the time to see what else out there @eddiebauer #whyihike #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure

The majority of this day was spent in a coffee shop in suburbia with a few friends. We sat for hours with our computers opened to stagnant screens of unanswered emails and half written blog posts as rain pounded against the window relentlessly and the conversation drifted from work to travel to life and everything in-between. Periodically checking the weather forecast for sunset and laughing at our unfortunate luck. But with bad weather in the forecast for a hundred miles in every direction it seemed only appropriate to do one of the areas most popular hikes. A thick fog engulfed our hike up and, in true Andrea fashion, I spat out every single thought that crossed my mind until, before we knew it, we were looking out above the clouds. If anyone was wondering, this is one oft he reasons #whyihike - because a last minute Hail Mary hike for a 30 minute snack break before being annihilated by rain and hiking out with spirits high, bellies full and the physical embodiment of a drowned rat is something I can get behind. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Living life in the outdoors, because there’s no other way I’d want to live. // @eddiebauer #whyihike #ebcontributor
One of the reasons I moved to Canada was to renew my passion for hiking and exploring. I had started to become a bit complacent in Montana, a little less motivated and a lot more content with a lazy day at home than I’d like to be, I knew I needed a change. I needed something new and exciting, I needed a new adventure, something to get me outside of my comfort zone. Major life changes like moving cross-country or even to a new country seem to do that for me. Once my spark starts to die, and my motivation levels dwindle, I go out and find something new I think may reignite it. Well to cut a long story short I think I’ve found it here in Canada, for the time being at least. And I cannot wait to explore more of what this beautiful country has to offer, and what better way to do it than on my own two feet #whyihike What motivates you to get out and explore? Thanks for your help with this one @mddyelrck @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor
When Baloo gets tired from hiking, he comes up to us and meows, letting us know that he wants to hitch a ride in our @eddiebauer Alchemist pack. And when he’s ready to hike again, he just crawls right out! B has always been a big communicator, so much so that we only had to encourage these habits vs. training him. His only rule is that he wants to see the views at all costs and will not be a happy camper if he can’t stick his head out 😼 #whyihike #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor

This is my favourite mountain in the Canadian Rockies (possibly in the world). It is short and extremely steep and has just enough exposure to turn my legs to jello and give a little blow to my ego every time I visit. I’ve been (literally) blown off of this mountain by a freak weather system, come face to face with a grizzly bear and slipped down a scree gully returning to the car covered in blood sweat and tears. The ascent route escapes me every time and I, without fail and with absolute confidence, will take the path of most resistance (and exposure and chossy rock). But it has also given me some of the most beautiful sunsets of my life and the biggest belly laughs with some of the best company. Its places like this that remind me all too well #whyihike - feeling the rush of nearly every emotion in the span of a few hours, away from everything that feels important when you have cell phone service and year after year never seeing another human on the trail.
⠀ ⠀ I featured these shorts in my stories a few days ago and got a handful of questions - they are the @eddiebauer Kick Back 2.0’s which I am weirdly obsessed with. #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure

Getting our lake-skate on with @eddiebauer - once every few years the conditions line up perfectly. The lakes freeze on a still night, and manage to stay frozen for a considerable length of time before a major snowfall. In this case, the winds would pick up and blow all the snow off the ice clearing it for us. Gotta love these short but eventful winter days with good friends and quality gear. #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure // filmed with @brookewillson @justindkauffman @timber_tails
This hike had been on my list for years but somehow never made it up to the top. It was too long or too short or didn’t include a summit and simply never met the criteria that felt important in the moment. Until this year, with rain in the forecast my plans shifted and a few nights in the backcountry turned into a series of day hikes including finally exploring this trail. There is something really special about trailheads at 4am in August - its dark but the nautical twilight renders headlamps unnecessary, the earth is cool and the air is crisp. We hiked above the valley floor on a steep set of winding switchbacks popping up above the treeline as the first light hit the peaks that encase the trail. It was hours before we ran into another soul on the trail (there are a few campgrounds, a backcountry lodge and an alpine hut along the trail) just @ryanclennett and I - a 381m (1250ft) waterfall to the east and a series of hanging glaciers and jewel toned lakes to the west. Mornings like this remind me #whyihike.

Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.
⠀ ⠀
For the past few weeks I have found myself stuck between the beginning and the middle of this change cycle. Much like the scramble up to this lookout wherein every step up the steep gully full of shale sinks in and you end up right where you began… I don’t know how much progress I have truly been making or where the heck the end might be. It’s frustrating and exhausting at its best and absolutely defeating at its worst. But in the most cliché way possible…. lights are at the ends of tunnels, beautiful alpine views are at the ends of climbs and change sucks but it’s the only way to grow.
⠀ ⠀
#whyihike #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer (ps if you are planning to do this scramble this season PLEASE remember your climbing helmet - I promise mine is just out of frame)
Its finally starting to feel like summer today at home (sorry, I likely just jinxed that) - but a few weeks ago I traded the snow for a mixed bag of rain and sunshine and gale force winds (and that was just the half hour spent at this lookout) along in Washington State. It was not the weather forecasted and likely the opposite of what I was hoping for when I booked my flights down. But isn’t that the real fun - this summer I am sharing all of the reasons #whyihike and this morning’s reasons are some of the things that hiking and spending time in the outdoors has given to me. Namely an appreciation for great weather, a tolerance for less great weather and a secret soft spot for days when the best call is to stay inside with a bottomless bowl of popcorn and Netflix asking if I am still watching after a dozen episodes of Lilyhammer.
⠀ ⠀
I just put up a blog about my recent early season visit to Washington and a few ideas to get your hiking legs back.

And, for the second day in a row I found myself awake, before two o’clock in the morning, making coffee and wishing that I had possessed the foresight to pack my bag before I went to sleep. But the weather looked good and 7:30pm is a normal time to go to bed on a Saturday night, right? Hiking in the darkness always seems to go by quicker and before we knew it the sky was turning pink and we were exactly where we wanted to be, drinking coffee, eating charcuterie and watching the sun rise - the only humans as far as the eye could see. We hiked down and returned back to the city before anyone even noticed we were gone, the alarm on my phone sounded as I was unpacking my gear and I laughed a little to myself, knowing that we had an entire extra bonus day before the world woke up. ⠀ ⠀

I first visited this slice of paradise filled with pristine lakes hanging high up in the alpine beautiful (seemingly endless) ridge lines and protected valleys for grizzly bears to spend their days. It was a last minute plan-b when the road to our original plans was foiled by a closed down forestry road. I sent an e-mail asking @tourismgolden for help and almost immediately was told where I needed to go (we took the less adventurous route in last year). I fell in love with that little town and all of its hidden gems. So when I had the opportunity to come back this summer and spend a week playing in their back yard I knew that this needed to be my first stop. A 16km (10mile) ridgeline with god-only-knows how much elevation gain/loss leading me right here. Eight hours of snow and thick fog and some of the slipperiest rocks I have encountered with 40lbs on my back it took a while and a glimpse of these lakes to remind me #whyihike.
⠀ ⠀ I did a write up on my blog (link on my bio) on this traverse and included everything I wish I knew before I went, my packing list for this trek and even a link to the gps tracks if you are keen on trying it for yourself.

Over the past few months I have been sharing all of the reasons #whyihike in collaboration with @eddiebauer. It’s made me reflect on why I first started hiking (spoiler: to impress a boy), my first backpacking trip wherein my mom and I had perfect weather at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, the friends that I’ve made along the way, the adventures (and misadventures) and all of the bumps and bruises and sliced open feet and tendonitis along the way. But this morning as I re-re-re-pack my bag for my first solo backcountry trip I realize that, at the root of it all, its because ten years ago if anyone had told me that I would be physically capable of (and actually enjoy) packing everything that I needed to sustain myself for a few days or a week, hoist it onto my back and march up the side of the mountain… I would have checked them into the looney bin. The only times anyone ever told me that I was strong when I was growing up was in reference to my will when I was being exceptionally stubborn. The real reason that I hike is because it reminds me that you’re never too old (or too young) or too weak or too busy (or too female) to do that things you never thought you could.

Some new faces, lots of familiar ones. Some new places, but even more we’ve been to before. As long as somethings happening outside, I’m going to be excited about it. Thankful for the last three months. @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor
To get to this spot, you have to hike 15km and climb over 1500m of elevation gain. It’s a grind but it’s worth every single step. Would you hike all day for this view? 😍❤️ @eddiebauer #whyihike #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure
Probably my favorite waterfall in the PNW. So full of colors and vegetation, and undoubtedly so easily accessible. I loved hiking down to it and exploring the area. I honestly could’ve spent hours in this spot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nathan would’ve been absolutely soaked had it not been for his @eddiebauer Cloud Cap Lightweight Rain Jacket. #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure #whyihike
”It’s a funny thing coming home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what’s changed, is you.” -Eric Roth ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I grew up on the side of a hill in a house with big windows overlooking the Rocky Mountains. The nearest town had a population just shy of 1,500 and when our four way stop was replaced with a traffic light it made national news - stealing the soul of our beloved small town. As soon as I could I moved away, to seemingly the furthest I could go without leaving the country. Its been over a decade since then, since that house on the hill was my permanent address. These days I stop by my parents’ house a handful of times a year, for Sunday dinners and doctors appointments - or unannounced with friends after a day of hiking in the Highwood. Last weekend was one of the former, I stayed for dinner and then the night. In the morning I took a walk up the hill that was the backdrop of my childhood - retracing the steps that led me up to what I remember being a feat akin to summiting Everest. The funny thing is that the expedition, the one that used to take all day and be filled with stops for investigating every single crocus flowers, stuffing my pickets full of rocks and twigs and taking mandatory sustenance breaks for fistfuls of honey nut cheerios, took all of five minutes. I reached the top and felt a little bit sad, a little bit silly and pretty nostalgic for a time when ten feet from my front door, within earshot of my parents, I was able to set out on the adventure of a lifetime. #whyihike #ebcontributor #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer
