We're indulging in the kind of Sunday with no plans and the day stretched out before us. We've indulged in a late and long breakfast and coffee with friends and now I'm settling into one of my reading books with a coffee and a stack of books. I'm finishing up The Shining and then thinking about starting either Bluebird, Bluebird or The Satapur Moonstone. Either way, I don't plan on leaving this nook anytime soon 😉. #currentlyreading #currentreads #theshining #stephenking #horror #octoberreads #octobertbr #sundayreads #amreading #coffeeandbooks #bookstacks #diversereads #thesatapurmoonstone #sujatamassey #bluebirdbluebird #atticalocke #booknerd #booksandblankets #bibliophile #readinglife #unitedbookstagram #readingnook
Give me your best graphic novel recs! One of my favorites is the totally underrated Prince and the Dressmaker by the amazing @wangstagram !! I feel like I plug this one a lot, but if you’re new here, I cannot more highly recommend this whimsical and beautiful book about dresses, identity, love, and finding acceptance for who you are! And while we’re talking underrated books, don’t hesitate to pick up Foolish Hearts and When the Moon Was Ours as well!! 👗 #starlitpages1019 - wolf in sheep’s clothing: underrated books 👗 #bookstagram #graphicnovels #bookbasket #theprinceandthedressmaker #foolishhearts #whenthemoonwasours #read #books #bookish #lgbtqbooks #diversereads #owlcratesociety
Let it be known that Hauser is a strikingly beautiful, clean-cut writer with a remarkable gift for landscape, both emotional and literal. That gift is certainly on display here in her novel Family of Origin, which largely takes place on an island replete with shacks and research stations and a crumbling hotel, insects, algae-choked water, and ducks, buffleheads, to be particular. The island is so carefully wrought, each of the many, teeming details so insanely alive and carefully drawn, that the emotional atmosphere rises as easily as the island-scape for the reader. It’s a remarkably compelling place, and the reason for its existence is too: Nolan and Elsa Grey have come to the island to see where their father died, and why he did, here, on a remote island filled with people who have largely retreated from mainland living. As the siblings work to understand not only their father in the context of the island’s landscape, but also each other, they encounter the inhabitants, winged and human, of the island in ways that are resonant, enticing, and suffused with feeling. It is, in large part, a thoughtful, restrained, gorgeous portrait of loss (both in families, but also of the earth) and disappointment, of the ways in which both are so clearly intertwined in family interactions, which unfold as the Greys explore the island. Indeed, my only qualm about Origin is from where much of the tension between Nolan and Elsa derives: a definitive transgression between them when Elsa was twenty and reeling from a parental betrayal and Nolan was fourteen and easily convinced. To my lights, the portraiture of the strained relationship between Nolan and Elsa is already strong, and is convincing without the added sexual strain that this transgression brings to the fore. It’s a distracting and distinct element, which is unfortunate because it could, and for me did a bit cloud the surface of what is otherwise a striking, oddball, precise, and shimmering narrative about the ways
We read this one for my book club this month, and we’re meeting this afternoon to discuss. Toni Morrison is incredible, and this reinforces that I need to keep revisiting her work. This book was devastating, but also sweet and bitter and funny. The personalities and relationships of the strong black women at the heart of this book and of the neighborhood of “Bottom” were the best part of the book. . . #sula #tonimorrison #bookclub #bookstagram #currentlyreading #amreading #theunreadshelfproject2019 #diversespines #diversereads #readwomen #autumn

Shoutout Uncle Bobbies for another great event! When I read the Percy Jackson series, or really any series growing up, I naturally wanted to see myself in the world, which is why I was so excited to hear about this book! Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia is a part of the “Rick Riordan presents” series which features a similar setup to Percy Jackson but featuring black characters and the stories that black kids grew up with. I am so excited to read this (although I told Kwame I really wished it came out like 15 years ago for me) and also, I really need to check out more of the Rick Riordan presents series.
Heartsong is out next week and I am SO READY. I never thought I'd get this attached to a pack of Wolves (and humans) and yet here we are. This series needs so much more attention. If you like found family, a bunch of gays or some paranormal business, this is perfect for you. . “All things change, and we must change with them.” - THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD by London Shah debuts on Oct 29th! . . . It’s Day 6 of the #lighttheabysschallenge! Today’s prompt is BOOKS SET IN THE FUTURE. . . . Stories set in the future have always been fascinating to me. The world building is what grabs my attention, but it’s the examination of the psychological, emotional, and cultural impact change has on humanity that keeps me reading. Marie Lu does a wonderful job of this in WARCROSS when she presents a technology obsessed future where being plugged into virtual reality is favored over real life. London Shah takes a look at what happens to humanity when they cannot accept the future they have been given and cling desperately to the past. Two very different futures, but equally as compelling to read about it. . . . #bookstagram #yabookstagram #bibliophile #booklove #bookworm #booknerd #ireadya #bookblogger #yabooks #yalit #youngadultbooks #booksofig #bookaddict #yalovin #yascifi #muslimshelfspace #muslimya #muslimsuthors #diversebooks #weneeddiversebooks #diversereads #lighttheabyss #lighttheabysschallenge #thelightatthebottomoftheworld #londonshah #marielu #warcross #wildcard #warcrossduology
Video #repost @tinalifford ・・・ I am looking forward to reading this book. I just recently started following Tina Liffird on IG. I didn’t realize she is so motivating. I love watching her videos. I think her book will really resonate with me. Being the lover of nonfiction that I am, I am always up for a good inspiring book. I consider myself a gatherer of wisdom. And this book seems as if it will be filled with the knowledge that I look for in a good book. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #amistadbooks #readreadread #readingisfun #fortheloveofreading #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #bookpost #bookcover #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #readingisfundamental #readsoullit #readingblackout #wellread #wellreadblackgirl #blackreaders #blackbooksmatter #blacklit #blackliterature #blackgirlsread #blackbookworm #blackbookstagram #nonfictionreads #diversereads #nonfictionbooks #goodblackreads #bibliophile @tinalifford

My first bookstagram meeting was exactly what I expected it would be ❤️. The combination of the most amazing women, a lot of books and booktalk is the best! Thank you so much for organizing this @suusreadsbooks and @marcella.andherbooks ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First, we did a ‘blind date with a book’ game and I’m so happy with the book I got from @puckabook! ‘That Inevitable Victorian Thing’ by E.K. Johnston’s sounds so interesting. “Set in a near-future world where the British Empire was preserved, not by the cost of blood and theft but by effort of repatriation and promises kept, That Inevitable Victorian Thing is a novel of love, duty, and the small moments that can change people and the world.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After that, three big piles of books were put on the table and we swapped the books who deserved a new owner. From @marcella.andherbooks I received ‘The Good People’ by Hannah Kent. It is a tale of the lore and superstitions of Ireland in the 1800s. From @whatadutchgirlreads I got ‘Brick Lane’ by Monica Ali about two Bangladeshi sisters and arranged marriages. From @teawithdarcy ’A Woman Like Her’ by Sanam Maher about Qandeel Baloch. And I got another book from @puckabook ’Kingdom of Sleep’ by E.K. Johnston which is a retelling of sleeping beauty. Thank you so much 🥰 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was such a lovely afternoon. I can’t wait to read all of these books and to meet more bookstagrammers! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you read any of these? Have you read this book?🌈 This book is about the DRAG QUEENS & KINGS scene 🕺🏿💃🏿🙌🏼✨🏳️‍🌈 I actually already wanted to read this book during Pride Month as it deals with the Drag Queen & King culture which I've never seen or read a book about and was very interested in. 🕺🏾💃🏿 The main character of this book is 17-year-old Nima who has brown skin and is into girls. 👭 The book starts with her telling her best friend about her feelings for her 🌈 Later on Nima gets introduced into Drag culture and meets several Drag Queens & Kings and tries out becoming a Drag King herself. 🕺🏾💃🏿🌈 The book took a while to introduce Nima into the Drag scene but once it did it got so much better and the best character ever - the Drag Queen Deidre appeared and sprinkled all her glitter and glamour over the book whenever she appeared 💃🏿✨🌈 I was really interested to learn a lot more especially about the Drag Kings scene because I've never really heard much about it before. 🕺🏾 Unfortunately, I had some issues with two characters in this book - Charles and Gordon. 😐 One acted like such an entitled straight boy who just believes that if he only stalks the girl of his dreams enough she just has to reciprocate his feelings. 😒 And the other one was just a general jerk all the time with such disgusting behaviour.. and just because someone's queer doesn't just excuse all that.. 😒 There was also way too much 'barfing' and talking with one's mouth full in this book and description of meat for my taste. 😐🤭🤢 I also had some issues with Nima's low self-esteem and sense of self-worth.. I could understand that that was to a point because of her mother leaving her and it fortunately got better in the end.. I just really don't like characters dragging themselves down all the time 😐 Other than that I liked the overall feeling of the town which reminded me both of Sims & Hart of Dixie. 🏡 It was also very
Hands up if you love Sunday mornings 🙋‍♀️ — Here’s something you might not know about me... I studied Japanese to A Level! In reality I have forgotten a lot of the speaking side of Japanese but I can remember how to write down my name - ポーピ— It’s probably the reason I have such a soft spot for Japanese novels in translation. If you haven’t read The Guest Cat then you must, but The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa will always be my favourite. So what are you waiting for? — PS the cat in the book is called Nana - なな 🐱

Here's a post of my recent #bookmail 📚 to update my feed for abit! It has been a very exhausting week, emotionally and mentally especially. Do excuse me for a short while... I haven’t posted one of these in a while but this is the next book I will be reading. Have you read it? • Each chapter of No Disrespect is devoted to someone who made a difference in Sister Souljah’s life—from the mother who raised her to the men who educated (and mis-educated) her about love—and each bares a controversial truth about the black condition in America: the disintegration of families; the unremitting combat between the sexes; and the thousand and one ways in which racism continues to circumscribe how African American people see themselves and treat one another. The result is an outspoken and often courageous rejoinder to the pieties of race, class, and gender by a writer who is at once wise, bawdy, brutally funny, and as sensitive a lightning rod in a thunderstorm. . . . . #goodblackreads #blackauthors #blackwriters #womenwriters #womenauthors #womenofcolor #pocwriters #africanauthors #africanliterature #africanlit #blacklit #blackliterature #bookstagram #urbanromance#bookwhore #wellreadblackgirl #blackreaders #blackbooksmatter #blacklit #blackliterature #blackgirlsread #blackbookworm #blackbookstagram #nonfictionreads #diversereads #nonfictionbooks #goodblackreads #bibliophile #bookporn #sistersouljah
