Flourish motto number 3: avoid hot spots and what I like to call warm spots! Hot spots are where lines touch tangentially (in other words, not an intersection where there is a clear angle made by two lines). In most cases, hot spots confuse our little human brains as to where the line direction is going. Take the left ‘yay’ as example, it’s almost as if I wrote an X on the bottom, right? When the brain sees potential alternatives to understanding the lines, very simply... it’s bothered. Therefore it’s not very pleasing to the eye. Warm spots (yes, I totally made this up but go with me here) are where lines get too close to each other that they are on the verge of becoming a hot spot. In some ways they’re even more displeasing to look at than hot spots. When lines get too close they look crowded and squished, and therefore look haphazard and messy. Instead ✨ try opening up flourish lines where you anticipate them to touch or come close. Stretch open loops where appropriate, and even take the opportunity to break your stroke. This can sometimes create dimension, and liveliness! In the right ‘yay’ it’s almost as if the first y is stacked on top of the second y, right? Are you enjoying these flourishing tips/mottos? Check out the FREE flourishing worksheet in my bio. 👍🏻

As promised in my previous post, here’s the first of ✨FIVE✨ flourishing mottos that I will be posting about, to help your flourishing practice. Use these skills with my new flourishing workbook —☝🏻link in bio! Without further ado, MOTTO NUMBER 1: core first, then flourish. Write the main body of your letter first, THEN extend the line of where you plan to flourish, outwards from the core of the letter. Important note: draw the stroke you plan to flourish from, a touch short (i.e. top of the h) so you are free to flourish in whichever direction, shape, and size you please. There are 14 ascender flourishes included in my workbook. Be sure to check them out!
It's the PROCESS, not the result. That's what makes calligraphy different from hand lettering. . Hand lettering involves drawing and building up the letter. You can create an outline of a letter and fill it in, or most people start with the "bones" of the letter and add on to it. . For calligraphy, lines are created in a single stroke. *NOTE: That doesn't mean that the pen stays on the paper the entire time, like you would in cursive!* It just means that you don't have to go back and add weight to the lines after creating them, because varying the pressure does that as you go. . Faux calligraphy is technically hand lettering (that's why it's called "faux" AKA "fake"!) -- but you are able to get a very similar look to calligraphy letters. . To us, the definition and classification isn't as important as knowing what you want to learn. Once you have an idea of the end result you'd like to achieve, you can work backwards to figure out what to study. . Make sense? If so, tell us what you ate for breakfast in the comments so we can confuse everyone who didn't read this whole caption!!😉🤪 . . . #handlettering#handletteringpractice#calligranewbie#brushcalligraphy#brushlettering#lettering#loveleighlessons#letteringtip#tombowfudenosuke#tombowmono#fauxcalligraphy#fauxrealcalligraphy
There sure is. Thanks to all who voted on this phrase. I've always been a fan of 'Less is More' and so I thought this quote was quite fitting. . Hope you all are having a lovely weekend and got some great shopping deals 😊 #letteringbyval
The average family of four spends 266 hours of screen-time during the holidays. @HP reached out to me to help change this years family time activities among dozens of other fantastic creators. Excited to share with you my contribution to this great campaign; A how to guide to Holiday Lettering. Growing up I’d spend a ton of time creating personalized cards and gift packaging from printing paper for my loved ones during the holiday season. In my tutorial you’ll learn the basics of creating your own personal brush lettered holiday words to apply to your cards and gifts. You can find it at http://hp.com/getreal I’d highly recommend checking out some other tutorials in the campaign and mix in some of the illustrations along side my lettering tutorial to create some unique patterns and layouts! Wishing everyone a happy holiday and hope you get some offline quality time with your family. #hp#getreal#sponsored
